TMC 14 Wall Hanging/Tic, Tac, Toe

Our challenge for October at The Mirror Crack’d is either a Wall Hanging, or you could follow our Tic, Tac, Toe board if you don’t fancy doing a Wall Hanging. Of course, if you are feeling really clever you could combine the two! If you opt for the Wall Hanging, Centre Square, you need not do any of the rest of the board, unless you want to. In which case it would work the same as any other TTT board, across top, middle or bottom, up and down left to right or diagonally.

I opted for a wall hanging.

Wall Hanging Complete

I used three MDF hearts from a pack of six and made a triple wall hanging. I made this as a tribute to my lovely Mum who sadly passed away in 2001.

After I gessoed them all, I painted all three with a combination of Picked Raspberry and Picket Fence Distress Paints. The light at this time of year isn’t good so you cannot see too well in the photographs the subtle differences between each heart, but each heart is a slightly different shade of pink.

Excuse the poor background in the following photographs, but again due to the light the detail of the hearts is not showing up so well on the white background picture above, but overall it looked better as a whole. I have broken them down though from a seperate set of pics taken in a different location.

Top

The top heart I stuck a band of lace across the middle, which I topped with a lovely porcelain plaque that I have had in my stash since forever. The two birds I painted with Maya Gold paint in Rose, and added some white frantage, and a pink flower. That frantage was a nightmare to heat because of the thickness of the MDF I couldn’t get it to melt from underneath and I cannot count the grains that shot off from above because everytime I got the heatgun close enough to melt it was close enough to blow the grains away. Eventually I dotted some versamark pen on this and the middle heart in order to try and hold some of the frantage to stay where I wanted it!

Middle

The middle heart has more frantage, plus two areas of texture paste which I spread through stencils I made myself from Memory Box distressed collage dies. I dusted each texture paste area with a different shade of mica powder. A light lemon at the bottom and a soft mauve at the top.

More flowers from my stash, plus two prima butterflies and a clip. The sentiment ‘Always in My Heart’ has a double meaning for me. When I was a little girl my Mum had a music box with a ballerina that danced round when you opened it to the tune of Always In My Heart. I now have that Musical Box tucked away safely.

You are always in my heart
Even though you're far away
I can hear the music of
The song of love
I sang with you
You are always in my heart
And when skies above are grey
I remember that you care
And then and there
The sun breaks through
Just before I go to sleep
There's a rendezvous I keep
And a dream I always meet
Helps me forget we're far apart
I don't know exactly when, dear,
But I'm sure we'll meet again, dear,
And my darling, till we do
You are always in my heart!

The sentiment is from Splodge Away and I painted it with the same rose coloured Maya Gold Paint as the birds in the top heart.

Bottom

The final heart I textured pasted through a stencil I created from Tim Holtz’s Mixed Media die set, and then dusted over it with a bright pink mica powder. I printed the pics of Mum from old photos after I scanned them. The one on the left she is about 18, and the one on the right she is mid fifties, and was taken on a holiday in Torquay wearing my Daughter’s straw hat! I surrounded the heart with Wild Orchid’s roses. I also added Mum, painted with rose MG Paint again. Finally there is a love heart charm dangling off the bottom.

The most difficult bit was threading the hanging thread and joining them all together!
